Welcome

Thank you for worshipping with us today. We are so glad you’re here! We believe that real friendships are possible even when people differ in their views on faith and life. We value conversation and want you to know that no matter where you come from you are welcome here.

At Resurrection SD our goal is to create an atmosphere of Christian Worship that incorporates the beautiful contributions of our own generation without discarding the spiritual wealth of our past. This Worship Guide is intended to help you better appreciate the movements within the beauty of historic Christian liturgy.

If you have any questions about what you hear or see today, I’d love to get together over coffee and talk about it. Please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Together in Christ,

HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TODAY AS WE WORSHIP

We hope that much of what you see and hear today is familiar, but there are a few things that may be new to you, even though they go back to the earliest days of the Church!

First, The Regulative Principle of Worship

God has revealed to us the acceptable forms of Christian worship in the Bible and we are not free, nor is it safe, to add to them. We are free, however, to express these forms in a culturally legible style that has the power to captivate our hearts and minds with the beauty of Christ. This is called the Regulative Principle of Worship. We pray that you will find our worship experience to be both biblically authentic and holistically beautiful (Luke 24:13-35; 1 Tim 4:13; Col 3:16; Acts 2:42; for a negative example see Exod 32:1-6).

Second, The Dialogical Principle of Worship

In Christian worship we are not just learning things about God; rather, God is actively speaking to us through His Word by the power of His Spirit, and we then respond in the worship of adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and praise. This is called the Dialogical Principle of Worship. It means that worship is a conversation with God! We pray that as you take part in this dialogue today you would hear and respond to the Incarnate Word, the Eternal God—the Lord, Jesus Christ. (Gen 12:1-8; Exod 24:1-11; Ps 106:1-12; Isa 6:1-7; John 1:1-14; Rom 10:17; 1 Thes 2:13; Heb 4:12; 1 Pet 1:23).

Third, Christ Centered Preaching

Jesus said that the entire Bible is primarily a story about who He is and what He has done for us as our champion. Therefore, the sermons you will hear at Resurrection SD will be more about Jesus than they are about us. This is called Christ Centered Preaching. We will talk about ethics (how to love God and people, and how life works best) and we will talk about the heroes of the faith (including their spectacular failures), but the key to discipline in the Christian life is a heart overflowing with love for God, and you only get that by knowing how much God first loves you (Luke 24:25-27; John 3:16; 1 Cor 2:1-5; Gal 2:20-21; Col 1:24-29; 1 John 4:16-19).

Finally, Children in Worship

We believe that a crucial part of Christian discipleship is children worshiping together with their parents. We invite children 5 and older to remain throughout the service. We have a nursery available downstairs starting at 11:10 AM for children 0-4 (Deut 4:9, 6:4-9; Ps 78:4, Eph 6:1-4; 2 Tim 3:15).

Entering into the Presence of the Lord

God always begins the conversation of worship by Calling us to Worship Him through His Word. We respond by singing songs of praise as we approach His Throne of Grace.

Reader:
On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples A feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine,
Of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, The veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; It will be said on that day,
People:
Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; Let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Songs of Approach

Worship Music: Janet Blair

The King of love my Shepherd is
Whose goodness faileth never
I nothing lack if I am His
And He is mine forever
And He is mine forever

Where streams of living water flow
My ransomed soul He leadeth
And where the verdant pastures grow
With food celestial feedeth

Never failing, Ruler of my heart
Everlasting, Lover of my soul
On the mountain high or in the valley low
The King of Love my Shepherd is
The King of Love my Shepherd is

Lost and foolish oft I strayed
But yet in love He sought me
And on His shoulder gently laid
And home rejoicing brought me

In death's dark vale I fear no ill
With thee, dear Lord, beside me
Thy rod and staff my comfort still
Thy cross before to guide me

Never failing, Ruler of my heart
Everlasting, Lover of my soul
On the mountain high or in the valley low
The King of Love my Shepherd is
The King of Love my Shepherd is

Oh-h-h
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Oh-h-h
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

And so, through all the length of days
Thy goodness faileth never
Good Shepherd may I sing Your praise
Within Your house forever
Within Your house forever
Within Your house forever

Never failing, Ruler of my heart
Everlasting, Lover of my soul
On the mountain high or in the valley low
The King of Love my Shepherd is
The King of Love my Shepherd is

What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer,
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom
My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace

To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to His
Oh how strange and divine, I can sing: all is mine!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

The night is dark, but I am not forsaken
For by my side, the Savior He will stay
I labor on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need, His power is displayed

To this I hold, my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley He will lead
Oh the night has been won, and I shall overcome!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

No fate I dread, I know I am forgiven
The future sure, the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And He was raised to overthrow the grave

To this I hold, my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh the chains are released, I can sing: I am free!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

With every breath, I long to follow Jesus
For He has said that He will bring me home
And day by day I know He will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne

To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to Him
When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat:
Yet not I, but through Christ in me!

When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat:
Yet not I, but through Christ in me!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me!

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, (it is well)
With my soul, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, (it is well)
With my soul, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, (it is well)
With my soul, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Oh Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be made sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, (it is well)
With my soul, (with my soul,)
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

The reading of the law exposes our sin and we respond with honest confession. The reading of the Gospel reminds us of our salvation in Christ—that we are already accepted and loved by God because of what Jesus has done for us through His Life, Death, and Resurrection. We respond with the Doxology, an ancient Christian Song of Praise.

Prayer of Confession

Moment of Silence

Corporate Confession of Sin

People:

We confess Almighty God that we have greatly sinned.
In our thoughts, and in our words,
In what we have done, and in what we have failed to do…

We confess that you have invited us to joy, yet we have chosen distraction. You have set a table before us, yet we have filled ourselves with lesser things.

We confess that we have tried to clothe ourselves in our own righteousness. We have trusted our goodness, defended our record, and imagined we could add to the perfect work of Christ.

Forgive us for our pride and strip away every false garment that keeps us from your grace.

Lord, Have Mercy.
Christ, Have Mercy.
Lord, Have Mercy.
Amen.

[ TRISAGION ]

Holy God.
Holy and mighty.
Holy, immortal one.
Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy on us.
Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Declaration of Forgiveness

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
And to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:
World without end. Amen, amen.

The Ministry of the Word

God Speaks to us through His Word by the Power of His Spirit; exposing to us the ugliness of sin, showing us the beauty of Christ, and calling us to a grateful obedience. We respond with a Song of Meditation and Praise.

221 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, 3 and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come.4 Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.” ’ 5 But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11“But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

The Word of the Lord. (Thanks be to God.)

Exposition of God's Word

“Man of Sorrows!” what a name
For the Son of God who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim!
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
In my place condemned He stood,
Sealed my pardon with His blood;
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Guilty, vile and helpless we,
Spotless Lamb of God was He;
Full atonement! Can it be?
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Lifted up was He to die,
“It is finished,” was His cry;
Now in heav’n exalted high:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

When He comes, our Glorious King,
All His ransomed home to bring,
Then anew this song we’ll sing:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a mystical encounter with God, where the Lord Jesus, through the power of the Spirit, communes with us in a special way. Just like physical bread and wine nourish our bodies, the mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ nourishes our spirits, and we respond with a Song of Rejoicing!

If you are a Christian and belong to any orthodox church, and you have been baptized, you are welcomed to participate in this sacrament with us today. If you’re not sure if that’s you, and you’d like to participate with us, please speak with any of our elders or ministry leaders after the service—we would love to help get you on a path towards partaking with us!

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Words of Institution

The Lord’s Supper

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored.
"He has done great things" we will say together
We will feast and weep no more.

We will not be burned by the fire;
He is the Lord our God
We are not consumed by the flood;
upheld, protected, gathered up.

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored.
"He has done great things" we will say together
We will feast and weep no more.

In the dark of night before the dawn,
My soul, be not afraid
For the promised morning, oh how long?
Oh God of Jacob, be my strength!

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored.
"He has done great things" we will say together
We will feast and weep no more.

Every vow, we've broken and betrayed -
You are the faithful one.
And from the garden to the grave
Bind us together, bring shalom!

We will feast in the house of Zion
We will sing with our hearts restored.
"He has done great things" we will say together
We will feast and weep no more.
We will feast and weep no more.
We will feast in the house of Zion

Bene-diction means “good word” and it is the last Word spoken in every service. This is not a prayer, this is God’s blessing pronounced over his people—raise your head and receive it! We go out into the world as servants and as lights knowing that we have the blessing, protection, and providential care of our faithful Covenant God!

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, 28

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely
And may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless
At the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Amen.
