Welcome
Thank you for worshipping with us today. We are so glad you’re here! We believe that real friendships are possible even when people differ in their views on faith and life. We value conversation and want you to know that no matter where you come from you are welcome here.
At Resurrection SD our goal is to create an atmosphere of Christian Worship that incorporates the beautiful contributions of our own generation without discarding the spiritual wealth of our past. This Worship Guide is intended to help you better appreciate the movements within the beauty of historic Christian liturgy.
If you have any questions about what you hear or see today, I’d love to get together over coffee and talk about it. Please don’t hesitate to contact me!
HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TODAY AS WE WORSHIP
We hope that much of what you see and hear today is familiar, but there are a few things that may be new to you, even though they go back to the earliest days of the Church!
First, The Regulative Principle of Worship
God has revealed to us the acceptable forms of Christian worship in the Bible and we are not free, nor is it safe, to add to them. We are free, however, to express these forms in a culturally legible style that has the power to captivate our hearts and minds with the beauty of Christ. This is called the Regulative Principle of Worship. We pray that you will find our worship experience to be both biblically authentic and holistically beautiful (Luke 24:13-35; 1 Tim 4:13; Col 3:16; Acts 2:42; for a negative example see Exod 32:1-6).
Second, The Dialogical Principle of Worship
In Christian worship we are not just learning things about God; rather, God is actively speaking to us through His Word by the power of His Spirit, and we then respond in the worship of adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and praise. This is called the Dialogical Principle of Worship. It means that worship is a conversation with God! We pray that as you take part in this dialogue today you would hear and respond to the Incarnate Word, the Eternal God—the Lord, Jesus Christ. (Gen 12:1-8; Exod 24:1-11; Ps 106:1-12; Isa 6:1-7; John 1:1-14; Rom 10:17; 1 Thes 2:13; Heb 4:12; 1 Pet 1:23).
Third, Christ Centered Preaching
Jesus said that the entire Bible is primarily a story about who He is and what He has done for us as our champion. Therefore, the sermons you will hear at Resurrection SD will be more about Jesus than they are about us. This is called Christ Centered Preaching. We will talk about ethics (how to love God and people, and how life works best) and we will talk about the heroes of the faith (including their spectacular failures), but the key to discipline in the Christian life is a heart overflowing with love for God, and you only get that by knowing how much God first loves you (Luke 24:25-27; John 3:16; 1 Cor 2:1-5; Gal 2:20-21; Col 1:24-29; 1 John 4:16-19).
Finally, Children in Worship
We believe that a crucial part of Christian discipleship is children worshiping together with their parents. We invite children 5 and older to remain throughout the service. We have a nursery available downstairs starting at 11:10 AM for children 0-4 (Deut 4:9, 6:4-9; Ps 78:4, Eph 6:1-4; 2 Tim 3:15).

Entering into the Presence of the Lord
God always begins the conversation of worship by Calling us to Worship Him through His Word. We respond by singing songs of praise as we approach His Throne of Grace.

Worship Music: Janet Blair
Blessed is the one who loves your word
Your ways are his delight
Knows that he needs it, eat, sleeps and breathes it
Thinkin’ on it day and night
But sad for the one who walks away
Sits down with all the scoffers
Building his kingdom, callin’ it freedom
Chasing after what the world offers
I want to be like a tree by the river!
Oh plant me down by the deep, deep water
When the sun gets hot my leaves won’t wither!
Oh plant me down like a tree by the river
Oh plant me down by your deep, deep water
I want to be like a mighty oak
Roots growing strong and deep
When the wind blows, the roots gonna hold
Cause you’re holding on to me
Yeah you’re holding on to me
I want to be like a tree by the river!
Oh plant me down by the deep, deep water
When the sun gets hot my leaves won’t wither!
Oh plant me down like a tree by the river
Oh plant me down by your deep, deep water
Plant me, plant me, plant me by the river and
Wash me, wash me, wash me with your wa - ter
I want to be like a tree by the river!
Oh plant me down by the deep, deep water
When the sun gets hot my leaves won’t wither!
Oh plant me down like a tree by the river
Oh plant me down by your deep, deep water
What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul.
When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul, for my soul,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul.
To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing;
To God and to the Lamb I will sing.
To God and to the Lamb Who is the great “I Am”;
While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing;
While millions join the theme, I will sing.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be,
And through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
And through eterni-ty I’ll sing on
Have mercy on me O God,
For I have sinned against you
Blot out the depths of my pride
Undo my soul with your truth
Have mercy on me O God
For I have covered my ears
Purge me of every excuse
My heart is ready to hear
Create in me, a clean heart
Create in me, a clean heart
Have mercy on me O God
For I have struggled in vain
Wash me of every defense
That I might rest in your grace
Have mercy on me O God
For I have spoken such hate
Remove the weight of this guilt
Open my lips for your praise
Create in me, a clean heart
Create in me, a clean heart
The reading of the law exposes our sin and we respond with honest confession. The reading of the Gospel reminds us of our salvation in Christ—that we are already accepted and loved by God because of what Jesus has done for us through His Life, Death, and Resurrection. We respond with the Doxology, an ancient Christian Song of Praise.

Moment of Silence
Corporate Confession of Sin
We confess Almighty God that we have greatly sinned.
In our thoughts, and in our words,
In what we have done, and in what we have failed to do…
We confess that we have loved looking Christian
more than being Christian.
We have preferred reputation to repentance,
image to integrity,
polish to purity.
We have sung loudly
And loved quietly.
We have built beautiful exteriors
and hidden fearful, self-protective hearts.
We have measured small things carefully
and excused large compromises.
Forgive us for spiritual performance.
Forgive us for religious theater.
Forgive us for worship that costs us nothing.
Lord, Have Mercy.
Christ, Have Mercy.
Lord, Have Mercy.
Amen.
Holy God.
Holy and mighty.
Holy, immortal one.
Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy on us.
Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Our Father, who art in heaven...
The Ministry of the Word
God Speaks to us through His Word by the Power of His Spirit; exposing to us the ugliness of sin, showing us the beauty of Christ, and calling us to a grateful obedience. We respond with a Song of Meditation and Praise.
23Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,2“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat,3 so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.
5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues7 and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.10 Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.11 The greatest among you shall be your servant.12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.
16“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.22 And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.
23“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!
25“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.
27“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
29“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? 34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.36 Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
37“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!38 See, your house is left to you desolate.39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
The Word of the Lord. (Thanks be to God.)
Exposition of God's Word
How deep the Father's love for us,
how vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only son, to make a wretch his treasure
How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turned his face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one, bring many sons to glory
Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished
It is finished oh oh x 4
I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ; his death and resurrection
Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart: his wounds have paid my ransom
It is finished oh oh x 4
Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart: his wounds have paid my ransom
We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a mystical encounter with God, where the Lord Jesus, through the power of the Spirit, communes with us in a special way. Just like physical bread and wine nourish our bodies, the mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ nourishes our spirits, and we respond with a Song of Rejoicing!
If you are a Christian and belong to any orthodox church, and you have been baptized, you are welcomed to participate in this sacrament with us today. If you’re not sure if that’s you, and you’d like to participate with us, please speak with any of our elders or ministry leaders after the service—we would love to help get you on a path towards partaking with us!
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Words of Institution
The Lord’s Supper
Crown Him with many crowns,
the lamb upon His throne.
Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns
All music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing
of Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless king
through all eternity.
Crown Him the Lord of life
who triumphed o'er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife
For those He came to save;
His glories now we sing
who died and rose on high
Who died eternal life to bring,
and lives that death may die.
Crown Him king
Lay my crown down at His feet
"Worthy is the slain lamb!"
With one voice we’ll sing
Crown Him the Lord of love;
Behold his hands and side.
Rich wounds, yet visible above,
in beauty glorified;
No angel in the sky
can fully bear that sight
But downward bends their burning eye
at mysteries so bright.
Crown Him king
Lay my crown down at His feet
"Worthy is the slain lamb!"
With one voice we’ll sing
Crown him the Lord of years,
the potentate of time,
Creator of the rolling spheres
ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail!
For Thou hast died for me;
Thy praise shall never, never fail
throughout eternity.
Bene-diction means “good word” and it is the last Word spoken in every service. This is not a prayer, this is God’s blessing pronounced over his people—raise your head and receive it! We go out into the world as servants and as lights knowing that we have the blessing, protection, and providential care of our faithful Covenant God!
Hebrews 13:20-21
Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, The great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, Equip you with everything good that you may do his will, Working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, Through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.
Amen.
