Welcome
Thank you for worshipping with us today. We are so glad you’re here! We believe that real friendships are possible even when people differ in their views on faith and life. We value conversation and want you to know that no matter where you come from you are welcome here.
At Resurrection SD our goal is to create an atmosphere of Christian Worship that incorporates the beautiful contributions of our own generation without discarding the spiritual wealth of our past. This Worship Guide is intended to help you better appreciate the movements within the beauty of historic Christian liturgy.
If you have any questions about what you hear or see today, I’d love to get together over coffee and talk about it. Please don’t hesitate to contact me!
HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TODAY AS WE WORSHIP
We hope that much of what you see and hear today is familiar, but there are a few things that may be new to you, even though they go back to the earliest days of the Church!
First, The Regulative Principle of Worship
God has revealed to us the acceptable forms of Christian worship in the Bible and we are not free, nor is it safe, to add to them. We are free, however, to express these forms in a culturally legible style that has the power to captivate our hearts and minds with the beauty of Christ. This is called the Regulative Principle of Worship. We pray that you will find our worship experience to be both biblically authentic and holistically beautiful (Luke 24:13-35; 1 Tim 4:13; Col 3:16; Acts 2:42; for a negative example see Exod 32:1-6).
Second, The Dialogical Principle of Worship
In Christian worship we are not just learning things about God; rather, God is actively speaking to us through His Word by the power of His Spirit, and we then respond in the worship of adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and praise. This is called the Dialogical Principle of Worship. It means that worship is a conversation with God! We pray that as you take part in this dialogue today you would hear and respond to the Incarnate Word, the Eternal God—the Lord, Jesus Christ. (Gen 12:1-8; Exod 24:1-11; Ps 106:1-12; Isa 6:1-7; John 1:1-14; Rom 10:17; 1 Thes 2:13; Heb 4:12; 1 Pet 1:23).
Third, Christ Centered Preaching
Jesus said that the entire Bible is primarily a story about who He is and what He has done for us as our champion. Therefore, the sermons you will hear at Resurrection SD will be more about Jesus than they are about us. This is called Christ Centered Preaching. We will talk about ethics (how to love God and people, and how life works best) and we will talk about the heroes of the faith (including their spectacular failures), but the key to discipline in the Christian life is a heart overflowing with love for God, and you only get that by knowing how much God first loves you (Luke 24:25-27; John 3:16; 1 Cor 2:1-5; Gal 2:20-21; Col 1:24-29; 1 John 4:16-19).
Finally, Children in Worship
We believe that a crucial part of Christian discipleship is children worshiping together with their parents. We invite children 5 and older to remain throughout the service. We have a nursery available downstairs starting at 11:10 AM for children 0-4 (Deut 4:9, 6:4-9; Ps 78:4, Eph 6:1-4; 2 Tim 3:15).

Entering into the Presence of the Lord
God always begins the conversation of worship by Calling us to Worship Him through His Word. We respond by singing songs of praise as we approach His Throne of Grace.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
the King of creation
O my soul, praise Him for He is thy
health and salvation
All ye who hear now to His temple
draw near
Praise Him in glad adoration
Praise to the Lord above all things
so wondrously reigning
Sheltering under His wings and so
gently sustaining!
Have you not seen how your
desires have been
Granted in what He's ordaining?
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Praise to the Lord who does
prosper your work and defend you
Surely His goodness and mercy
here daily attend thee
Ponder anew what the Almighty
will do -
How with His love He befriends
you!
Praise to the Lord who with
marvelous wisdom has made you
Given you health and with loving
hand guided and stayed you
How oft in grief has he not brought
you relief?
Spreading his wings to o'ershade
you
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Praise to the Lord! O let all that is
in me adore Him
All that has life and breath come
now with praises before Him
Let the Amen sound from His
people again
Gladly forever adore Him
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
I've heard of You, how You hung
the stars
Though You hold all things, Your
hands are scarred
I've heard of You, how You laid the
earth
But you spilled Your blood into this
dirt
I've heard so many things, but now
I see
Behold the Lamb of God, who takes
away our sin
Behold the Lamb of God, now fix
your eyes on Him
I've heard of You, how you set forth
time
But you walked with us, You lived
and died
I've heard of You, how You sent a
flood
But you washed us clean, with Your
own blood
I've heard so many things, but now
I see
Behold the Lamb of God, who takes
away our sin
Behold the Lamb of God, now fix
your eyes on Him
The God who's over us; He is now
here with us
The God who reigns above; He is
the God who loves
The God who is our judge; is He
who pleads for us
The God who's over us; He is now
here with us
The God who reigns above; He is
the God who loves
The God who is our judge; is He
who pleads for us
The God who gave us life; He is the
God who died
He is the God who died
He is the God who died
Behold the Lamb of God, who takes
away our sin
Behold the Lamb of God, now fix
your eyes on Him
I've heard of You, how You made
the earth
But You drug Your cross through
this dirt
My worth is not in what I own
Not in the strength of flesh and
bone
But in the costly wounds of love
At the cross
My worth is not in skill or name
In win or lose, in pride or shame
But in the blood of Christ that
flowed
At the cross
I rejoice in my Redeemer
Greatest treasure,
Wellspring of my soul
I will trust in Him, no other.
My soul is satisfied in Him alone.
As summer flowers we fade and die
Fame, youth and beauty hurry by
But life eternal calls to us
At the cross
I will not boast in wealth or might
Or human wisdom's fleeting light
But I will boast in knowing Christ
At the cross
I rejoice in my Redeemer
Greatest Treasure,
Wellspring of my soul
I will trust in Him, no other.
My soul is satisfied in Him alone.
Two wonders here that I confess
My worth and my unworthiness
My value fixed - my ransom paid
At the cross
I rejoice in my Redeemer
Greatest Treasure,
Wellspring of my soul
I will trust in Him, no other.
My soul is satisfied in Him alone.
The reading of the law exposes our sin and we respond with honest confession. The reading of the Gospel reminds us of our salvation in Christ—that we are already accepted and loved by God because of what Jesus has done for us through His Life, Death, and Resurrection. We respond with the Doxology, an ancient Christian Song of Praise.
Reading of the Law
Pastor Rob Novak
John 6:60–68
60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”
66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
Prayer of Confession
Moment of Silence
Corporate Confession of Sin
We confess Almighty God that we have greatly sinned.
In our thoughts, and in our words,
In what we have done, and in what we have failed to do…
We have found Your word hard, and we have grumbled at its demands.
Like those who once followed Christ and then turned back, we have
drifted from Him when His teaching cost us something — retreating to
the comfortable, the familiar, and the culturally acceptable rather
than holding fast to Him alone.
Forgive us, Lord, for the sake of the One to whom there is nowhere
else to go.
Lord, Have Mercy.
Christ, Have Mercy.
Lord, Have Mercy.
Amen.
Holy God.
Holy and mighty.
Holy, immortal one.
Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy on us.
Have mercy, have mercy on us.
Declaration of Forgiveness
Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

The Lord’s Prayer
The Ministry of the Word
God Speaks to us through His Word by the Power of His Spirit; exposing to us the ugliness of sin, showing us the beauty of Christ, and calling us to a grateful obedience. We respond with a Song of Meditation and Praise.
1Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.
3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.)
5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
The Word of the Lord. (Thanks be to God.)
Exposition of God's Word
O sacred Head now wounded
With grief and shame weighed
down
Now scornfully surrounded
With thorns Thine only crown
O sacred Head what glory
What bliss till now was Thine
Yet tho' despised and gory
I joy to call Thee mine
What Thou my Lord hast suffered
Was all for sinners' gain
Mine mine was the transgression
But Thine the deadly pain
Lo here I fall my Savior
'Tis I deserve Thy place
Look on me with Thy favor
Vouchsafe to me Thy grace
What language shall I borrow
To thank Thee dearest friend
For this Thy dying sorrow
Thy pity without end
O make me Thine forever
And should I fainting be
Lord let me never never
Outlive my love to Thee
We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a mystical encounter with God, where the Lord Jesus, through the power of the Spirit, communes with us in a special way. Just like physical bread and wine nourish our bodies, the mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ nourishes our spirits, and we respond with a Song of Rejoicing!
If you are a Christian and belong to any orthodox church, and you have been baptized, you are welcomed to participate in this sacrament with us today. If you’re not sure if that’s you, and you’d like to participate with us, please speak with any of our elders or ministry leaders after the service—we would love to help get you on a path towards partaking with us!
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Words of Institution
The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper
Come and stand before your Maker,
full of wonder, full of fear
Come behold His power and glory,
yet with confidence draw near
For the one who holds the heavens,
and commands the stars above
Is the God who bends to bless us,
with an unrelenting love
Rejoice, come and lift your hands
and
Raise your voice, He is worthy of
our praise,
Rejoice, Sing of mercies of your
King
And with trembling, rejoice
We are children of the promise, the
beloved of the Lord
Won with everlasting kindness,
bought with sacrificial blood
Bringing reconciliation, to a world
that longs to know
The affections of a Father, who will
never let them go
Rejoice, come and lift your hands
and
Raise your voice, He is worthy of
our praise,
Rejoice, Sing of mercies of your
King
And with trembling, rejoice
All our sickness, all our sorrows
Jesus carried up the hill
He has walked this path before us,
He is walking with us still
Turning tragedy to triumph,
turning agony to praise
There is blessing in the battle, so
take heart and stand amazed
Rejoice! When you cry to Him, He
hears
Your voice, He will wipe away your
tears
Rejoice! In the midst of suffering
He will help you sing
Rejoice, come and lift your hands
and
Raise your voice, He is worthy of
our praise,
Rejoice, Sing of mercies of your
King
And with trembling, rejoice
Bene-diction means “good word” and it is the last Word spoken in every service. This is not a prayer, this is God’s blessing pronounced over his people—raise your head and receive it! We go out into the world as servants and as lights knowing that we have the blessing, protection, and providential care of our faithful Covenant God!
Jude 24–25
Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you
blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God,
our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and
authority, before all time and now and forever.
Amen.
